Mesbah Energy Co. is a leading company in the field of heavy water production in the Middle East under the supervision of Iran Atomic Energy Organization. The company was founded in 1998 to supply the heavy water needed for the Arak Heavy Water Reactor. The complex's production capacity is 20 tonnes of product - high purity heavy water with 99.95% isotopic richness - per year. After successfully exploiting the heavy water production complex, Mesbah Energy Co., using its heavy water as a deuterium source, produced isotopic compounds labeled with deuterium.

The main use of isotope O-18 is in the form of oxygen-18 water. H2 18O is used for the synthesis of fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG). This compound is used in a device called a PET scan (positron emission tomography) to detect cancerous tumors and determine the progress of the disease.
